VANCOUVER – BCcampus, on behalf of the Industry Training Authority (ITA), today announced the successful proponents of a recent RFP to design, develop and implement two flexible learning (FL) trades programs for cooking and welding as part of the new E-PPRENTICE initiative.
“Today’s announcement is an important first step in the rollout of the E-PPRENTICE flexible learning program,” said Kevin Evans, Chief Executive Officer of the ITA. “We are very pleased with the talent and skill brought to the table by these successful proponents and look forward to the online product they will deliver to students across the province. Our goal is to make sure quality trades training is available to as many apprentices and employers as possible, to encourage more to get involved in and ultimately complete apprenticeship programs.”
The E-PPRENTICE program for professional cooking will be led by Camosun College, while development of the online welder program will be led by the Piping Industry Apprenticeship Board (PIAB) United Association (UA) Training Centre and Lambda Solutions, a B.C. eLearning company.
The professional cook and welder E-PPRENTICE programs will provide students with an integrated, community-based approach to flexible learning. Learners will be supported by their employer, instructor, and peers throughout the program. Weaving together workplace and technical training the model uses face-to-face and online teaching and learning.
The online structure of the program gives students flexibility and convenience, allowing them to stay in their home communities and work in their chosen trade during much of their studies.
“Camosun has assembled a broad and diverse team of educational and industry partners to build this new program. Along with partners Northern Lights College and Okanagan College, four expert chefs will assist in program development, and their contribution will make sure our course material is of the highest possible quality and relevance to the industry,” said Liz Ashton, recently retired President of Camosun College. “Our eLearning partners – Desire2Learn and eTraffic Solutions – will provide the interactive media content necessary to enhance our students’ educational experience.”
“Our team is excited and truly committed to ensuring that this project will be successful and that BC’s students receive an outstanding E-PPRENTICE option for the welding professionals,” said Al Phillips, Executive Director of the Piping Industry Apprenticeship Board (PIAB). “We will leverage the considerable e-learning expertise of our partner Lambda Solutions, existing course material, templates, and assets, as well as public training providers in order to deliver this project in the most efficient manner possible. Experience from prior assignments will allow our project team to kick-start this initiative, accelerate project time-lines, and not reinvent the wheel.”
Design for the two E-PPRENTICE programs will begin immediately with courses available for student entry by early 2010.
A second call for proposals to develop further flexible trades programs will occur in two phases. An Expression of Interest is scheduled to be released in July to assess the interest of various industry partners, associations and training providers. Following this, a mixer event is scheduled in late August to connect new media and e-learning companies with the training institutions and industry associations. In September the second RFP is scheduled to be released. The E-PPRENTICE trades included in that RFP will be announced at that time.
A request to design, develop and implement a flexible millwright program was not awarded and will be re-issued with the next round of RFPs.
ITA manages BC’s trades training system and works collaboratively with industry, training providers, labour unions, government and other stakeholders to provide career development opportunities for individual British Columbians. BCcampus is responsible for leading and coordinating the new E-PPRENTICE program on behalf of ITA.
Funding for E-PPRENTICE is provided by the Industry Training Authority, through the Labour Market Agreement between the Governments of British Columbia and Canada.
Vancouver, B.C., June 9, 2009 - Lambda Solutions, providers of exceptional e-learning products and expertise, has forged an alliance with ERAC, (Educational Resource Acquisition Consortium) a consortium of public school districts. An agreement was reached earlier this week to deliver School Safety Orientation for New Employees, an Online Course for new and existing staff to 194 school districts in BC.
ERAC’s Janet Gregory explained, “Lambda’s school safety course was a great fit based on Worksafe BC’s requirement that every new employee of a school district complete a course of this nature prior to commencing their employment with the school district.”
“Lambda Solutions has created an effective and concise method of delivering this course to employees. The web-hosted online course is divided into a number of modules which employees can complete at their own pace. Their progress is recorded and submitted to the employer once the employee has completed the course.”
“We are extremely excited to form an alliance with ERAC, who will now be able to provide our excellent Safety Orientation course to it’s extensive network of members in a cooperative buying program, explained Jonathan Rand Lambda’s Director of Sales and Marketing.”
School Districts in BC who would like to participate in the Program can contact ERAC or Lambda Solutions for details.
ERAC is a consortium of BC public school districts and independent schools that cooperate on software, textbook, video and learning resource evaluations and purchases. The goal of ERAC is to reduce the amount of time school and school district staff spend evaluating, selecting, negotiating and purchasing software, textbooks, videos and learning resources. The company is operated under the umbrella of the Vancouver School Board and is funded by The Ministry of Education and independent schools, which pay an annual fee to remain members of ERAC. A recent contract with ACL illustrates our on-going commitment to serve our clientele with the most appropriate methodology in online training. ACL (Business Assurance Analytics) works closely with the internal and external audit communities to provide monitoring and analytic technology solutions required to assess data integrity and transaction compliance. Fiona Van Antwerp, Director of Sales Operations was kind enough to answer our questions.
What business need did ACL have to meet by using rapid eLearning development?
Our challenge was based on the fact that there was only one trainer with a sales group of 70 people. Sales employees were being hired at different times and couldn't really wait for a classroom-training course to be offered. We also had a great deal of content to communicate and yet still needed our content experts, who were being used to facilitate in the classroom back on the operation side. We found that eLearning allowed our new employees and existing employees the flexibility they needed to learn at their own pace. We also needed to have a means to test our employees to ensure that they did the training and that they could apply the content.
Was the content considered time-sensitive?
Yes, both in terms of new content that we had to deliver and also because we hired people based on organizational needs at differing times during the year so it had to get to them in a timely way.
Did you rely on using a Subject Matter Expert (SME's) to produce the content for the course?
Yes, we did and as a result of using a rapid eLearning approach we could better utilize our SME's time. Efficiencies are created in terms of producing online training and in putting our experts back into the operational side of the business as quickly as possible.
How much sitting time would an employee take in going through the course/module?
Half an hour has been the general rule with content created into smaller logical modules.
Was the content originally created in PowerPoint slides?
Yes it was because our SME's used Power-Point to deliver the content.

Before

After
How quickly was Lambda able to turn your projects around?
Once the template was created, we have been able to use it again and again for subsequent courses. Our sales reps are now familiar with the layout of our courses, which means that they can access new information more rapidly.
We found that as a result of using the rapid eLearning approach that we are spending roughly a third of the time from start to finish. That means all members of the team including content creation from the SME, Lambda development time and our administration are roughly cut by a full third.
That does not mean that all courses are cookie cutter and certainly we do different activities for each course, but the instructional design is pre-done and that's the aspect that I like.

A cohort program was built around the eLearning course to blend high tech with high touch. The 12 week program allowed employees to do some work on their own (but completion of the course was broken down for them week by week) and share their learnings through web collaboration (regular meetings through virtual classroom - Microsoft LiveMeeting). Observational coaching from an expert was included and ensured that the behaviours were encouraged through ongoing performance feedback and coaching from their manager. Finally, the course linked to online FAQs and other reference tools.
Lambda recently delivered an on-line training course to Kumon (Reading and math after school learning centers). In order to maximize face-to-face training for franchisees across North America, Kumon needed to replace one of the existing sections of their training currently presented in-person (using PowerPoint), with an interactive, self-paced online course.
Using Lambda ClearView technology, we repurposed an hour and a half session into an online course and will host it so that learners can login via a secure site, complete the course and take all necessary tests. Learners will be able to choose subjects independently from the table of contents (pictured below) in between the two-four day sessions.

This online course represents a first for Kumon, North America and was designed to be a highly interactive hosted course with an ability to easily update course content as needed. According to our Director of Client Relations, Jason McIvor, "Kumon wants to put a solid first step forward and see what they can do with online learning. The fact that they chose Lambda Solutions to guide them through this process is pretty exciting."
Background: Vancity needed a way to capture their knowledge capital and standardize product knowledge for staff.
Lambda developed online training modules that standardized their product training. Moodle was helpful in conducting employee pre and post-tests so that they would be directed to specific lessons most appropriate for their learning needs.
Our Newsletter editor asked Simon Fulber and his team the following questions about how the course, Building your Personal Financial Acumen has been received by employees.

It is always critical for a company to do follow-up evaluation and assessment on the products they produce. We wanted to learn how Vancity has adapted to using Moodle and to learn generally how the course was received by employees.
Have you received any verbal feedback or post-course evaluations on the course? If you could summarize the comments, what are the negative and positive remarks?
As the course belonged to part of a larger program, it was identified as the most valuable component by staff. Layout, easy to navigate, design (both visual and breakdown of content) as well as interactive features such as Activities and Tips seemed to resonate with our participants.
Difficulties around Log In process, Computer Requirements (resolution), and Navigation (links sometimes had to be double clicked to access) were mentioned, but were very minor and could be dealt with once participants spoke to our team of Field Trainers. In terms of Admin, other than minor glitches, the only challenging component is the Marking Scheme or Logic with Quizzes.
What was the process of developing the course like for your team?
Collaborating with Lambda Solutions on our Building Your Personal Financial Acumen program has been a very educational and effective experience for our whole team. From the Design, Development and Project Management perspective, Lambda was very flexible and adaptive to our needs. For some members of the team, this was their first eLearning project. I can safely say that it was a positive experience and Lambda staff really provided assistance, support and learning that will prove invaluable!
Has the course been easy to maintain thus far?
Overall, the course has been fairly easy to maintain and the members from Lambda have been very helpful when we have needed to figure things out. They have always made themselves available and have responded to all our questions and requests.
Have you been able to define a Return-on-investment (ROI) from this course?
At this point, we have not yet calculated an ROI on the program. We have been using the Building Your Personal Financial Acumen program as of last September and while we have some data that will formulate our ROI, we are not yet comfortable to share results.
Cheryl Milner, Lambda Solutions Newsletter editor asked Tom Grady about his perspective on usability issues.
Jakob Nielsen believes web pages should be simple to navigate and intuitively organized. Given our work in the eLearning field, I'm wondering if you have identified other components to consider beyond good interface design?
Yes, not only must the interface be intuitive but it should be based on sound instructional design. Each page should logically follow one to the next. Given that on-line learning, by definition, is missing the on-going cues and context set in a traditional classroom, the learner must always be informed about where they are in the learning process.
Learners want to feel that there is a flow to the learning - that they are making progress so we tend to keep individual pages slim and ensure that all instructions are clear and demonstrative.
What methods have you used to increase learner motivation while engaged in an on-line course?
Simplicity is important. We tend to allow the learner only two or three places to go to on a screen. We don't believe in overloading the page with content but rather to give them the sense that they are moving forward.
In increasing levels of complexity and engagement...
What are your fundamental usability standards or protocols in conducting usability testing?
ICBC has its own usability department so under normal circumstances all courses would be reviewed by them, but for the purposes of this interview this is what we are concerned with:
Lambda is currently fully engaged in usability issues as we near completion of our BC Hydro Emergency Procedures On-line Training Course.
One key aspect in redefining usability in the eLearning space is to apply instructional design principles to attain learnability. Once again learnability is defined as the ease and speed with which users can learn and retain skills and knowledge. Lambda has created both a concept-based on-line course along with a series of scenarios where they must work through an emergency situation from the onset until users are completely safe in a muster area.
Our own usability standards required us to:

Social learning theory focuses on the learning that occurs within a social context. According to the literature, social learning considers how people learn from one another, encompassing such concepts as observational learning, imitation, and modeling. Although many species of animals can probably learn by imitation, social learning theory deals primarily with human learning.
While it is safe to assume that this concept is probably as old as our civilization, Internet technology has changed the way we learn through social software tools. Blogs, wikis, podcasts, RSS feeds, instant messaging and online communities transformed social learning and play an important role in the learning process of today's learners.
Recognizing the potential for social software applications to support meaningful collaboration and knowledge-building in online communities, a consortium of BC post-secondary institutions (BCIT, UBC, SFU and UVic) initiated in 2005/06 the first phase of the development of a project titled Social Software Framework. This BCcampus-funded project delivered an online knowledge repository (www.sociallearning.ca) in the form of an interactive blog. The Social Learning site houses tools, templates, tutorials, workshop materials, screencasts, podcasts, and a blog that will be populated with custom-created materials and some of the best research available from the educational community in BC and worldwide.
Building upon the success of the first phase, a second phase for this pilot project is currently underway. BCIT, a leader of this project, partnered up with three private companies: Lambda Solutions, Donat Group, and Odyssey Learning, who were tasked to create a support system for five participating institutions in British Columbia. The development of the project includes creation of custom templates, Instructional Design management and ongoing technical support.
During the second phase, the participating companies will determine whether the SocialLearning.ca is useful to educators and students across BC and how it can be implemented both into the curriculum and the existing systems. The companies will also research and develop a management system for the site that would allow BCcampus and other participating institutions to maintain and support this innovative tool.
Comments Shevy Levy, Lambda Solutions' President: "This is a very exciting, cutting edge project because it allows us to work with the next generation of on-line learning services based around Web 2.0 technologies. We are creating a new model that would allow BC post-secondary educators and students to use and share learning knowledge and practices."
Teekay Shipping, an international transportation company that ships 10% of the world's oil, chose Lambda Solutions and Odyssey Learning Systems, to develop and implement an online orientation course. This course will be used by all of Teekay's new employees worldwide, including those who work on ships. Current employees will also have access to the course and can use it as a reference and a performance support tool. The development for the course has already begun and Lambda plans to launch it in the early spring of 2007. Jason McIvor, Director of Sales, answers questions about the project.
I've heard it took Teekay Shipping awhile to find a suitable vender, why did they choose you?
That's right, by the time we came on board, Teekay Shipping went through several rounds of proposals but they could not find anybody suitable. Tanya Northcott from Odyssey Learning approached us and we wrote the proposal together. Teekay Shipping liked our previous experience with a multi-media highly interactive online orientation we built for Blast Radius. They were also attracted to the idea of blending Moodle and Lambda's ClearView technology.
What's the advantage of using LCV and Moodle in this case?
Well, when you use Moodle, you save money because you do not have to worry about licensing costs as it is an open-source technology. LCV gives our clients solid instructionally-designed templates that can be used in the future for rapid development of other courses. Therefore, there is a good ROI for clients as this combination allows them to save 30% to 60% on the course costs and grants them true ownership of the course because they can update content themselves.
How is this course different from other orientation courses you worked on?
This orientation will be more media-rich than your average orientation. For example, there will be a virtual tour of ships, and video messages from the executive team in addition to engaging activities. On the backend, we will need to address the fact that some employees will need to take it on a ship but that, of course, will be seamless to the learners. We look forward to working with Teekay Shipping and finding solutions to these challenges.
Kumon North America, chose Lambda Solutions to develop their first online orientation for their franchisees. Based in Chicago, Kumon North America is the head office for international math and reading training centers for children in Kindergarten to Grade Twelve.
Kumon first started 50 years ago in Japan by Toru Kumon, a teacher and parent who wanted to help his son do better in school. Mr. Kumon developed a unique instructional method that helps students excel. Today Kumon Math and Reading Centers are present in 43 countries with 400 Centers (franchises) in North America alone. Franchises are required to undergo extensive training. Jason McIvor, Director of Sales at Lambda Solutions, answers questions about the project.
Usually learning providers have to look for business, i.e. bid on RFPs and pitch to clients, not in this case I hear?
Yes, Kumon North America actually contacted us just before the Holidays last year. Their staff in Chicago found us through their own research. They contacted six or seven other companies along with us and RFQ-ed this project.
Why did an international training company based in Chicago choose Lambda Solutions?
They chose us for several reasons. First, they were very impressed with our customer service - we responded to their RFQ promptly and efficiently. Second, they felt very confident in our instructional design capabilities to bring this course together. Third, because of our previous experience we've successfully developed orientation courses for Blast Radius, BC Hydro and TK Shipping. Also, Shevy Levy, Lambda Solutions' President, holds a Master's Degree in mathematics and has a teaching background, so she knows the culture and has the expertise. Finally, we were competitive in terms of our pricing.
Can you highlight the key aspects of the project?
For franchise training, Kumon franchisees are required to complete two-four day face-to-face training sessions in Chicago. To make the training more efficient, they plan to make their Orientation module that focuses on administrative procedures, online. Using Lambda ClearView technology, Lambda Solutions will repurpose an hour and a half session for online mode and will host it so the learners can login via a secure site, complete the course and take the tests; the learners will take the course in between the two four day sessions on their own.
What is unique about this project?
This is the very first of a kind online course for Kumon North America. They want to put a solid first step forward and see what they can do with online learning. The fact that they chose Lambda Solutions to guide them through this process is pretty exciting. Also, just like us, they are in the business of training and I am sure we will learn from them as much as they will learn from us.
Did you know that Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations require all employers to provide training on safety procedures for their employees? For most organizations, these training sessions are mandatory and should be repeated annually. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS), WorkSafeBC, Canada Safety Council and Department of Justice Canada provide wealth of information on workplace safety and emergency preparedness.
Unlike 10-15 years ago when environmental disasters were viewed as unlikely events that might take place in the distant future, recent thunderstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes in the US and severe snowstorms here in BC made them very real bringing the question of emergency preparedness to the forefront of many organizations. Obviously, the best way to be ready for emergency is to be prepared and preparedness involves training. Many employers across BC are taking action and implementing emergency preparedness training in the workplace.
BC Hydro has recently commissioned Lambda Solutions to develop an emergency preparedness course for their Edmonds location. The course focuses on emergency evacuation procedures in event of earthquake, fire or a bomb threat and will be mandatory for all employees and contractors who work in that location. Encouraging every occupant in the building to take the course promotes a sense of community and increases overall preparedness.

To make the mandatory training easy and fun, Lambda built the course using a problem-based approach that involves edu-gaming and individualized evaluation immediately upon completion. Built on Lambda's ClearView (LCV), the course features 3-D graphics, virtual space and real-life scenarios. On average, it will take about 15 minutes to complete the course. The shortness of time allocated for the course is designed to emulate a sense of emergency, similar to a real-life situation.
Once the pilot at Edmonds location is completed in late March, BC Hydro Training Team will implement the course in other locations across BC. Lambda Solutions built this course modularly, which means BC Hydro will be able to replace the graphics to seamlessly customize it for other locations.
Earlier this Fall Rogers Wireless, one of Canada's largest providers of Wireless, Digital Cable and Hi-Speed Internet products and services, chose Lambda Solutions to develop a blended learning course designed to support Rogers' B2B division. Lambda's team was tasked with developing the content as well as designing the framework of this unique tool. The course is based on the Lambda's ClearView technology.
This tool will be used as a common resource by the members of the Rogers Business Support Group across the country and will consist of two components: synchronous and asynchronous. Over 200 employees across the company will take part in the real-time launch of the course that will be presented in both French and English. The second part of the course is asynchronous and is designed to serve as a reference tool for current and newly hired employees to help them educate and transition customers through the local network portability era set to kick-off in March 2007.
"This course allows Rogers Wireless to seamlessly incorporate blended learning into their corporate training environment and boost their competitiveness to help them meet the challenges that will arise once the Mobile Number Portability commences," says Jason McIvor, Director of Sales at Lambda Solutions. "The LCV technology also allows Rogers to easily update the content once the course goes live."
BC Hydro, the second largest utility company in Canada, has chosen Lambda Solutions to produce an online safety course. A major factor in BC Hydro's repeat business is Lambda Solutions' ability to create learner-friendly, easily updateable courses that integrate seamlessly with the client's infrastructure.
The online course focuses on safety in an emergency situation. This e-course will be interactive and utilize a number of simulated scenarios that will respond to learners depending on their choices.
"In today's day and age, the need for such course is essential. Bringing awareness and educating one's employees on how to act in case of an emergency can potentially save lives. Our solution serves as a tool for increasing awareness and understanding among BC Hydro learners," says Shevy Levy, Lambda Solutions' President. "We are very excited about this project. It is a challenging but timely topic and it will give us an opportunity to demonstrate our knowledge, bring eLearning technology to the next level, and continue our working relationship with BC Hydro."
Their other courses for BC Hydro include a module for BC Hydro's online orientation and an overview of a 15+ module course on electric fundamentals.
"The FRD module went live yesterday. The feedback is very positive from the client group and the learners. I would lik..." Learn more >>
